Gentamycin sulphate is the salt form of the broad-spectrum antibiotic gentamycin (a.k.a. gentamicin). Gentamycin is active against clinically relevant bacteria, such as: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens, and is used to fight infections from Staphylococcus, Citrobacter and Enterobacteriaceae species. Gentamycin is a natural mixture of four congeners, one of which is gentamicin C2a. Gentamycin has been included in biomedical implantable materials, such as, bone grafts, to reduce the risk of infection.
Gentamycin Sulfate is a broad-spectrum, aminoglycoside antibiotic used for cell culture which inhibits protein synthesis in sensitive organisms. Gentamicin sulfate inhibits protein synthesis by binding to L6 protein and 50S ribosomal subunit. Gentamicin sulfate is reported to have activity against gram-negative bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and some mycoplasmas. Gentamicin sulfate is reported to have low toxicity to mammalian cells and viruses at certain concentrations, and Gentamicin sulfate is useful for long-term tissue culture studies with viruses. This compound is a mixture of Gentamycin c1, c1a and c2.
Details
Sulfate salt of an antibiotic complex produced by fermentation. Three closely related components that are chemically amino-saccharides. White to buff-colored powder. pH (4% solution) 3.5 to 5.5. Odorless.
Inhibits protein synthesis by binding to L6 protein of 50S ribosomal subunit. Antibacterial. Antibiotic complex consists of three closely related components, gentamicins C1, C2, C1a, and also gentamicin A which differs from the other members of the
